Alvar Aalto, 1898 – 1976, was a Finnish architect, painter and sculptor. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware, in a career which spans from the 1920s to the 1970s.
In 1932, he patented a new form of laminated bent plywood and, with partners, set up a company called Artek, to cope with the demand. An example of his design in the form of the birch coffee table photographed, came up at auction in March 2015 at Lyon & Turnbull and sold for £425.
